This chapter questions stereotype accuracy, using a recently developed perspective on stereotype-based judgment: the shifting standards model. In general, the model suggests that when perceivers make judgments about members of social categories on stereotype-relevant dimensions, they do so by calling to mind a within-group standard or comparison. A “shifting standards” effect is present when judgments of group members on objective rating scales show stronger evidence of assimilation to stereotypes than the same judgments on subjective scales.
